On December 10, 2022, Ana and I were lucky enough to catch Thom Yorke, Jonny Greenwood, and Tom Skinner’s new band The Smile, performing live at The Mission Ballroom in Denver, Colorado. The new band’s vibe definitely echoes Radiohead but shares more mature insight and supreme understanding of emotive arrangements. Growing up in Denver gave me access to some world-famous music venues, and opportunities to hear a wide variety of international talent. When I was 14, My best friend Danny and I started a tradition of concert-going that would last a lifetime, for Danny at least. We saw shows at the Paramount, The Mammoth (now Fillmore) and Fidler’s Green Amphitheater. We would get a parent to drop us off at Red Rocks at about 10 am, so we could get in line for front row seats. These days were always adventurous, inspiring and empowering. There were several times we had no idea how we’d get home afterward, but usually we’d get a hold of one of the older siblings and work on our powers of persuasion. We might have grown up a little too quick amongst these crowds in the mid 90’s, by senior year of high school we were well versed in all of the hallucinogens and designer drugs typically supporting the main act. Still today, my inner child lives at Red Rocks. Music plays a huge role in my art and motivation; the melody flows into lines, the rhythm beats gestures through my hand, new perspectives and poetic themes inspire introspection and exploration. Being immersed in an intimidatingly large crowd of like-minded souls, basking in laser lights and heart-shaking soundwaves is one of the most invigorating and unifying experiences in our culture. Even in the darkest auditorium, it’s easy to see the inner child of every attendee rising in crescendo as the troubles outside the arena fall silent. in my Dream Schematics, I can revisit this space.
The Smile live was like a great sermon, empowering and rejuvenating both spiritually and physically. It was perhaps the best concert experience of the year. I was energized, My inner child is happy, and I will get to replay the vibes in my studio for months to come! Do you find live music to be this rewarding?
